Flowering glume on a bard, raised point, papery, convolute, 2-lobed, be- tween the lobes bearing a jomted, 3-fid awn; palea short, obtuse.—Nees, 1. c. p. 171. 3 Cape species. Genus scarcely distinct from the following. 38. ARISTIDA, Linn. Spikelets panicled or subracemose, 1-flowered, tlie flowering glume stipitate. Outer glumes 2, membr^ous, unequal, mostly ])ointlc88, the lower shorter. Flowering glume hard, convo- lute, aAvucd at the apex, the awn 3-partite or 3-fid, mth or Avitliout a joint at base. Palea minute. 'Grain terete, en- closed in the flowering glume.—Kunth, Enmn. 1. c. p. 187. Arthrathcrum and Cha3taria, Nees, 1. c. 174, 186. A widely-dispersed genus, containing about 15 Cape species.—Tlio awn is jointed and caducous in Arthratherum; unjointed and persistent in Chcctaria. SUBTUIBE 3. OEVZEiE. 39. LEERSIA, Soland. Spikelets 1-flowcred, compressed, racemose - paniculate. Outer empty glumes 0. Flowering glume and palea herba- ceous, rigid, compressed, keeled, pointless, closed, aboiit equal in length. Stamens 1-3-6. Grain compressed, fred, covered by the valves.—Nees, 1. c. p. 193. L. Mexicana is found in Uitenhago. Stamens 6 in this species. 40. MALTEBRUNIA, Kunth. Spikelets 1-flowered, panicled. Outer glumes 2, small, membranous, channelled and keeled, pointless. Flowering glume and ])alea membranous, boat-like, subequal, compressed, the glume much the wider, i)ointless. Stamens 6.—Nees, 1. c. p. 194. M. 2>reliensilis, found by Drego, is unknown to me. Culm much branched; leaves subsessilo, hairy on the margin and keel armed with recm'vcd, minute prickles.
