But the greatest novelty of the book is the introduction of continued fractions, then, it seems, for the first time presented to the world. Moxen, 1659 THE VERY RARE ORIGINAL ENGLISH EDITION, unknown to Lowndes and Watt. The machines described are chiefly based on the hydraulic theorems published by SALoMoN DE Caus, the author’s father (q. v. infra). They include engines ‘toraise water by means of falling water ’ (a favourite perpetwum mobile), ‘to counterfeit the voice of small birds by means of water and air’, ‘an Engin which shall niove of itself’ (worked by the expansion of wir, heated by the sun, and therefore a prototype of the steam engine), ‘to represent divers birds which shall sing diversly when an owl turns towards them,’ ‘to make organs to sound alwaies when the sun shall be south’, and many other ingenious contrivances. Pp. 1-16 comprise an explanation of hydraulic principles, illustrated by woodcuts. 1t would be unkind to perpetual motioners to dwell on this work on Water-works being translated by a Leak! ‘ CAUS (Salomon de) Les Rarsons des Forces MOUVANTES, avec diverses MACHINES, tant utilles que plaisantes, aus quelles sont adioints plusieurs desseigns de GROTES et FONTAINES ; with 2 engraved titles, and very numerous full-page and other engravings on copper, besides wood- cuts, illustrating a great variety of curious Machinery, large folio, old calf, newly rebacked ( first engraved title soiled) ; excessively rare, £7. 7s Francfort, Jan Norton, 1615 First Epirion of this celebrated work. ‘In the first part occur his enunciations of the theorems of the expansion and condensation of steam, and of the elevation of water by the application of heat, which have gained for him in some quarters the honour of being the first inventor of the steam engine... Itis almost certain that Hdward Somerset, 2nd Marquis of Worcester [q. 7. post], to whom this honour has also been ascribed, and later engineers, knew and developed the principles enunciated by de Caus.’—D.
