This edition is also interesting from its dedication by Stmon GryNnaus, Professor of Greek at Basel, to CUTHBERT TUNSTALL, Bishop of Durham. Gryneus visited England two years before the publication of the above edition, and although already a reformer and friend of Luther, was warmly received by Sir Thomas More, and doubtless also by Bp. Tunstall, whose equal orthodoxy, liberality, and love of learning are well known, 1195 JOHN FLAXMAN’S COPY: 1196 ——— OPERA que supersunt OMNIA [Greece et Latine], ex Recensione DAVIDIS GREGORII, M.D., Prof. Savil., R.S.S. ; with vignette on title, and numerous diagrams, folio, contemporary stamped white parchment (a number of ll. browned, but a SOUND COPY) ; RARE, £1. 10s Oxonice, e Theatro Sheldoniano, 1703 This copy belonged to JoHN FLAXxMAN, R.A., the Sculptor, and has his auto. pasted on flyleaf. The translation was made, apparently from the Arabic, by ADELARD [AXTHELHARD] oF Batu. In his dedication the printer says that the difficulty of printing geometrical designs had hitherto made it impossible to print geometrical books ; but that this difficulty had been overcome so well by great painters, that ‘qua facilitate litterarum elementa imprimuntur ea atiam geometrice figure conficerentur’. 1200 —__— ELEMENTORUM GEOMETRICORUM Libri XV, cum Expositione THEONIS in priores & BARTHOLOMEO VENETO Latinitate donata, CAMPANI in omnes, et HypsicLis Alexandrini in duos postremos; adiecta sunt PHANOMENA, CATOPTRICA et OPTICA, deinde Protheoria MARINI et Data, postremtm, Opusculum de Levi et PoNDEROSO, hactenus non visum; with numerous woodcut initials and diagrams, folio, original hf. vellum (large and sound copy, but wanting 3 ll. as below), £1. 5s Basileew, Joh.
