    •MtM, ORGANS OF RESPIRATION. All animals possess organs for respira- tion, adapted to the medium in which they live. Fishes have the branchiae or gills, over the delicate fringes of which the water received by the mouth passes, imparting to the blood circulating within the thin membrane, of which the branchiae are composed, the vivi- fying influences of the oxygen, which the water as well as the atmosphere contains. Many of the larger fishes have lungs, re- sembling in many respects those of ter- restrial animals. Where these exist, air is necessary for respiration, and they are obliged to rise to the surface of the water in order to breathe. Among the animals that respire air, insects have the simplest arrangement: the air en- tering the body by means of small openings in the sides, communicating with longitudi- nal air-tubes in which the air circulates.
