Appleton and Co., 445, Broadway, 1866 E:XCEEDINGLY RARE. Mr. Williams in his Bibliography of Lewis Carroll has placed the facts about the first three issues of Alice in Wonderland beyond dispute, both as to the publishing of the first edition in England in 1865 and in America in 1866, and as to the complete re-setting of the second edition. Of the first issue, he has traced nine copies; of the second he says: “ As to the Appleton issue, I have only actually seen one copy, and that is in my possesion; and I have never heard of but three or four others.”—op. cit. p. 19. The binding exactly resembles that used for the Eng- lish editions of 1865 and 1866, except that “‘ Appleton & Co.” appears instead of “ Macmillan & Co.” at the foot of the back.
