    characteristics, but combine them with other qualities, especially in the treatment of drapery, which show that the influence of the Attic artists employed under Pericles had spread even to Argos. This need not surprise us, if we admit that Polyclitus himself fell under the same influence in his later years. It is, however, fortunate that our evidence as to the work of Polyclitus is fullest in the case of those athletic statues which were the most distinctive products of his art, and which exercised the greatest influence on his successors.
