    CHAPTER VII SCOPAS Scopas is in many ways the most modern of all ancient sculptors; his works give the most direct denial to the often repeated assertion that Greek art lacks indi¬ viduality and the power to express emotion. We are, indeed, told that Praxiteles also 66 infused into marble the emotions of the soul,” and we have seen to what degree and in what manner we can trace this attain¬ ment in his extant works. It consists rather of a study of mood or temperament than of actual emotion, and thus may well escape appreciation, especially where we are dependent upon copies that are sure to miss the subtler qualities of the original. Scopas, on the other hand, is now known to us as the master of passion, whether in the actual energy of strife or feelino- or in the character stamped upon the features by a passionate nature. His wonderful power in this direc¬ tion cannot be overlooked even by the most casual observer; and it marks him as the originator of that
