    In preparing the Fourth Edition of this book, I have endeavoured to make it a concise and a practical exposition of the science of Midwifery of to-day. The volume has been thoroughly revised, and several of the chapters have been re-written. A chapter has been added on anti- septics in Midwifery, and an Appendix on the obstetrical use of anaesthetics. I owe the expres- sion of my hearty thanks to my friend Dr. W. K.
