He speaks disparagingly of the members of the British Cabinet and the shameful instances of partiality and favouritism which pervade all military and naval appoint- ments, refers indignantly to the unjust treatment meted out to Duckworth and quotes from Admiral Collingwood’s letter on the same subject ; discusses the appoint- ment of Lord Wellesley to the Embassy at Seville, and the appointment of his brother, Sir Arthur Wellesley (afterwards Lord Wellington), as commander-in-chief of the troops in Portugal. Whitehall, 24th May, 1672. &Z 2s An important letter written five days after the Battle of La Hogue, when the Iinglish and Dutch fleets, under Admirals Russell and Rooke, deteated the French fleet commanded by Admiral Tourville. ‘Complaint having been made to the Queen, that you stopped an Advice Boat which was going to the Fleet, to give notice of the French being under saile and of the place where they were, her Majty. would have you forthwith give an account, how the matter of fact was, and what was the reason of doing it.’’ Much discontent was caused in England by the tailure to follow up the victory of La Hogue. The public threw the blame on Admiral Russell, the com- mander of the allied fleet, and Russell, in turn, threw the blame on Nottingham, from whom he received his orders. A parliamentary enquiry was held but ended in nothing, but in the following year Nottingham was forced to resign. 824 O’?CONNELL (DANIEL, 1775-1847). Irish Politician. Called the “ Liberator.” COLLECTION OF 16 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED ALL ADDRESSED TO COUNSELLOR BENNETT, MANY MARKED “PRIVATE” AND ‘“ CONFIDENTIAL.” Extending to 51 pages, 8vo. and 4to. Dated between September, 1815 and February, 1831. ALSO A MANUSCRIPT, PARTLY IN O’CONNELL’S HAND, BEING HIS OPINION ON PRECEDENTS FOR APPOINTING AN ATTORNEY AND SOLICITOR-GENERAL FOR THE QUEEN IN IRELAND. 11 pp., folio. £10 10s An extremely interesting and important collection of letters, etc., almost entirely relating to political matters in Ireland and reconciliation with England. He reters to his visit to Dublin to find out ‘‘ how the land hes ’’; he sees very little reason to confide in the Administration, ‘‘ they take tolerably good care of themselves and none at all of Ireland.’’ Speaks of a possible rupture between English and Irish Catholics; mentions the Whigs who had behaved badly to their friends: ‘* Plague on that policy that courts enemies and neglects friends. I fear it is British Whiggery.’’ In a very long letter O’Cennell states that he wants nothing for him- self, but much for Ireland, and gives a list of what he wants, with remarks thereon, and concludes by saying that ‘‘ the Repeal of the Union would produce the only radical cure.”’ Two early letters relate to his fatal quarrel with Alderman d’Esterre, and the proposed duel with Sir Robert Peel, which was prevented by the police. 825 OWEN (SIR EDWARD C. R., 1771-1849). Admiral. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED TO LORD MELVILLE. 4 pp., 4to. Calcutta, 9th May, 1830. £1 10s This long letter, written by Owen whilst commander-in-chief in the East Indies, is entirely on naval matters. He asks Melville for instructions regarding the advis- ability of sending ships of war to Canton; refers to the relations between the English fleet and the Chinese authorities; etc., etc.
