About this work

Description

Film-maker Julian Hendy's father was killed in a random attack by a schizophrenic man in 2007. In this film, he explores his memories and feelings about the event and assesses problems in Britain's mental health system. Hendy estimates that about 100 people every year are killed by someone suffering with a mental health problem. He researches some of these cases and speaks to Dolores Altaras whose son was killed in a brutal random attack by a young psychotic patient. Other families also recount their tragic tales. Hendy discovers a strong aversion within the mental health system to talking about mental health and violence. Consultant psychiatrists Tony Maden and David James believe the relationship between mental ill health and violence needs to be reassessed. Hendy's investigation shows that there have been huge problems managing violently psychotic patients, particularly when they are allowed out of full-time hospital care and that at least one in five mental health homicides is preventable.
