The health services provided in this area remain the same as have been described in the reports for 1930 and subsequent years. National Health Insurance.—The number of insured persons in the Isle of Wight County Insurance Committee’s Register in 1935 averaged 31,206 against 30,437 in 1934 and 30,548 in 1933. Local Government Act, 1929.—No alteration has been made in the medical services transferred to the Council under the provisions of this Act. In December, 1934, a scheme was approved under which patients requiring hospital treatment at Parkhurst could be admitted through your Committee and apart from the Poor Law, although the Infirmary and Institution remained under the supervision of the Public Assistance Committee. Two patients were admitted under this scheme during December, 1934, and one of these died on the last day of the year leaving one patient in residence on January 1st : 24 patients were admitted during 1935, 18 were discharged, 5 died and 2 were in the Infirmary at the end of the year. Of the 26 patients admitted, 17 were required to contribute towards the cost of their treatment, their contributions varying between 7/- per week and 35/-, 4 were members of the Royal Isle of Wight .County Hospital Contributory scheme and the Contributory fund paid 6/- per day for these ; and 5 patients were unable to make any contribution. Various structural improvements have been made at the Infirmary including the building of a new Kitchen, a new Nurses’ Home and a new Mortuary, and the old “Isolation” Pavilion has been altered and improved. The Public Assistance Committee decided also to re-name the Infirmary and in future it is to be known as “St. Mary’s Hospital,” Parkhurst.
