![Deaths.—There were no deaths from Sepsis. Two deaths occurred from “ Other Diseases and Accidents of Pregnancy and Parturition ” giving a death-rate from Maternal Causes of 1.10 per 1,000 live and still births. The corresponding rates for England and AVales were: — Puerperal Sepsis (including abortions with Sepsis), 0.49; other causes, 1.30; total Maternal Mortality—1.79. The figures given below show the rates for Newport over a series of years and for England and Wales since 1937. From them it will be seen that there has been a gradual reduction in the rates in quinquennial periods since 1896, in Newport’s maternal death-rates. Peiiod.
