The Pharmacopoeia states the doses of the various drugs and their preparations which may safely be given to an adult, but these doses are often not rigorously kept in prescribing. They vary with the purpose for which the drug is required and the age of the patient (see Prescribing). The following is an account of the preparation of the phar- macopoeial preparations, and the attempt has been made to arrange the doses so as to make them easy of remembrance. Aceta.—Solutions of the active principles of the drug extracted from it by maceration or digestion with acetic acid (not vinegar). The B. P. contains three. Dose. Acetum Can- cetum Can- 1 -n , „ n ■. , tharidis }Ext-use only- Dose. Acetum Ipecacu- ~| anhae V 5—40«l. — Scillaj j Aquae.—Aqueous solutions impregnated with some volatile substance. Mostly made by distilling the drug with water. Those in the B. P. made thus are— Aqua Pceniculi ~] Dose. — Pimentse ' , 94 — Rosse ? 1 — Sambuci i I Aqua Anethi ^ Dose. — Anisi j — Aurantii Floris }► 1—2^. — Carui j — Cinnamomi J Aqua Laurocerasi (Standardized 1 per cent, real Hydro- cyanic Acid) 1—2 3 (note dose). Two are made by distilling the essential oil with water: Dose. I Dose. Aqua Menthse Piperita? 1—2%. \ Aqua Mentha? Viridis 1—2%. Two are simple solutions in cold water: Dose. I Dose.
