No text description is available for this image![the refuse as well as the gases finding its way into the flue: it is also provided with an ordinary furnace frame and doors ; the latter are required for two purposes, firstly, to start the furnace with fuel when commencmg operations ; secondly, for the extraction of metallic articles [from a tea-kettle to a sardine box], and the clinkers which result from burning refuse [containing every conceivable kmd of incombustible waste] :—When the furnaces are in fiiU work, the clinkers, &c., require to be with- drawn every two hours, and, at about the same mterval, the attendant on the top of the destructor commences shovelhng m a fresh charge. One man suffices to feed six cells for the day working, but two are requu-ed for the night shift, most of the refuse being delivered after sunset.
