Description
Cross-section through a cluster of maize leaves, LM Confocal micrograph of a cross-section through a cluster of maize leaves. Cell nuclei (red/orange) inside individual cells within the leaves are visible here. Plant tissue was stained with Safranin O and Fast Green. Maize is one of the most widely grown cereal crops in the world. It is used as a staple food, livestock feed, and as a raw material e.g. for processing into high fructose corn syrup (popular in the USA where it is used to sweeten processed foods and drinks). Genetically modified maize crops are being grown to provide resistance to pests and herbicides. Image created in collaboration with Jim Haseloff. Width of image is approximately 250 micrometres.
