Shute, FIRST EDITION, woodcut view of Venice on title and many woodcut portraits, head-preces and initials. con- temporary English binding of calf gilt, g.e. large arabesque centre and corner-pieces on sides, the ground filled in with a semis of a small flame-like stamp, the intertwor of the centre cartouche decorated with an eight- powmted star on a fess and a semis of a small stamp (slightly smaller than that in the general background), six impressions of the same star (? or mullet) flanking a lion passant guardant in each of six panels on the back, on the whole IN EXCELLENT CONDITION; sold as a binding, not subject to return This fine specimen of English binding Bhan resembles that on the Britwell copy of Florio’s Montaigne, 1603, sold in these rooms in April, 1924, a reproduction of which figures as the frontispiece to the sale catalogue. The centre stamp is identical, though the workmanship here is less delicate; the corner stamp and small tools are different, but the general lay-out is the same. The book is dedicated to William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, and Philip Herbert, Harl of Montgomery (the “Incomparable Pair of Brethren” to whom Shake- speare’s plays were dedicated eleven years later) and it is possible that this is the copy bound for presentation to one of the two.
