![and heires of eternalllife, and {0 tofettle thei mindes with great comfort and confidence of living happily for ever. Bot there are two forts of temptations, which before all others; are ameanes to fhakethis confidence, The one, which proceedeth from our felues, either for want of well applying in our hearts and minds the exterior te{timonies which God pre- fenteth and giueth vatovsol our adoption,to be members of his Church, for by a feeling of the want(as we thinke) of interior and (pirituall marks, by reafon of the {mall quantitic and weakneife whichis in vs of thofe diuine graces. The other temptation proceedeth from another caufe, and {pecially confifteth in common and long afflictions, which ordi- natily aflaile vs in this life. Now'as there isnothing of greater importance then thefaluati- en of our foules;fo there is nothing which more grieuoully croubleth and afflicteth weake confciences, defirous of life eternall, then doubting and fearing not to be children of God, and of thenumber of the bleffed, For from thence proceedeth {adneffeand anguith of gind, whicknone can compreh end, but thole onely that haue had experience thereof, 2 True and alfured meanes to comfort the faithful against the dsftrust of their indignitie, merite, andignorance, in the fecrets of elettion and falnation. Toaid our infirmitie concerning that which toucheth the firlt kinde of temptation 4- forefaid , it is Gingularly and {pecially to be noted, for one of our confolations that many fall into this diftreife, becaufe they pretend with themielues, to refolue of their owne faluation, by an examination whether they are worthy to bee the children of God. Now 28 no manis nor can bee worthiy their doubts 4nd diltruftes eafily make them fall into des {paire. But there are others ahich content themifeluesin their curiofities, onely to compres hend, whetherthey bee of thenamber of thofe that are elected and predeltinated, whofe other wifeatfurethemfelues, that God loueth and boldeth them for his children, if pre- {ently they have not perfcct vaderitanding of the great milterie of Gods fecret and eternal counfel]. And yet it confilteth not ia the protound examination of worth and merites, nor yet in the high and curious fearching into the predeltination of the Saints, that wee muit feekeforehe a(furance of ouradoption. But onely in the holy dodtrine of the Gof- pell, which in proper tearmes revealeth vato vs the markes of our vocation, regeneration; ia(tification, and {anGification, whereof wee hauefpoken before, and whereby weeare ala bis Sonne, that bee might bee the first borne 4%ong many bretoren: And thofe whom bee predesti- wated, themalfohee called, them alfa hee suStified, and whom bee suitified, thems hee alfo glorified, For every one will confeffe , thatthey whoin the counfell and eternall decree of God,are eleGed and predeftinated to beemadelike voto Chnift , reprefentiog in them the image of bim which maketh them fit for celeltiall glorie are children of God, bow thofethat are baptized in the Church, and illuminated with the knowledge of the Gofpell, beleeve their finnes are wathed and made cleane by the blood of the Lambe; by the ful fatisfaction made by Ghrift tothe iuftice of God; and ioyfully beare their crotfe; to follow Chrift, and to be madeconformabletohim, as the holy Spirit endoweth them with grace, arecalled and ioftified at laft to bee glorified in the kingdomeof heaucn, asthe whole Scriptures witne(fe withthe Apottle Saint Panis _ the great Dodtonr of the Gentiles, oppofing the willand power of God againit all im- peachments, addeth, What [ball wee thenfayto thefe things? If God bee on onr fide » who can bee againstvs? As alfotothe fameende inanother place hee maketh this coaclutioo, fay- ing: Forif by the offenceof onc (thatis eAdam) death reigned through one, much more fhall they which receive that abundance of grace, and gift of thae righteoufnelle, reigne make vs participants of this faluation of his Sonne.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b30335103_1023.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
