About this work

Description

Above, the child as remembered in life. Below, small scenes of its death, coffin, and tomb. Interpretation suggested on acquisition in 1932: "a very curious memorial picture, hand painted, of a child who had a passion for carpentry. In the exercise of this hobby he broached a barrel of wine, and finding the contents suiting his taste, he drank his fill and then expired. Below are seen his parents weeping over his grave."
