A small piece of glass tube projects through this cork to allow of the escaping gas being ignited. The separator D is filled with the water to be examined, and 1 c.c. of the nitrite iodide and 1 c.c. of the acid solution are added, and the stopper instantly fixed in its place, displacing a little of the water, and including no air. By inverting the separator a few times, a uniform admixture of these re- agents with the water is secured ; then its nozzle is pushed through the bottle cover, and the whole allowed to stand for fifteen minutes to enable the reaction to become com- plete. A rapid current of coal gas is now passed through the bottle A, until all the air is displaced, and the gas burns at G with a bright flame.
