![To the Mayor, Aldermen, and Council of the County Borough of Birkenhead. TtENTLEMEN , I have the honour of su])mitting to you iiiv Twenty-First Iteport to the Health Committee on the Health of Birkenhead, viz., that for the year H)12. I am again privileged to record a satis- factory condition of the Health in the Borough. In considering our own health returns it is interesting to note that the pi eliminary figures issued hv the Registrar General sliow that during 1912 872.800 births and 486,982 deaths were registered in England and Wales, showing a natural increase of population of 385,818 compared with an annual average of 395,462 in the preceding five years. The Birth Rate fell below any figures pre- viously recorded—viz., to 23*8 per 1000. The Death Rate was also the lowest—13*3 per 1000, being 1*9 lower than the average for the 10 })receding years. The Infantile Mortality of 95 per 1000 births is also the lowest yet recorded for the Country, the average for the last 10 years being 125. Epidemic diseases caused 36,123 deaths and violence 19,814. The population of the United Kingdom in the middle of 1912 was estimated at 45,662,572, England and Wales having 36,539,636 inhabitants, Scotland 4,738,300, and Ireland 4,384,636.
