    The thalassaemias are the commonest genetic disorders of the blood and constitute a vast pubhc health problem in many parts of the world. Although these diseases are particularly common in certain tropical and Mediterranean areas, cases have now been described in practically every racial group. The second edition of this book has been completely rewritten. After a chapter de¬ scribing the structure, genetic control and synthesis of haemoglobin, successive sections deal with the closely related haemoglobino- pathies such as sickle-cell disease, then in turn with each variety of thalassaemia. The clinical and the laboratory aspects of diagno¬ sis and management are particularly stressed but, in addition, there is considerable emphasis placed on the molecular pathology and abnormalities of haemoglobin synthesis which underlie each of the thalassaemic disorders. £7.00 net
