However various and oppofite the complexions, the cuftoms, and opinions of mankind in different ages and climates, this has been the mo ft univerfal ob« je<ft, on which all defiles have fix'd, and all paffions center'd at laft. Various are the treatifes which have been com* pos'd on the fubjed: of Health ; this has employ'd the pens as well as the purfes of the wifeft and richeft in all ages. This has exercis'd the labour of the chymift, the penetration of philofophers, and the ambition of mighty princes. But after all thefe learned refearches, it certainly depends more on the condud of life, and the difpofition of the heart, than on the painful purfuits and dreams of chymifts, and the idle reverys of the brain ; and is undoubtedly more the true genuine refult, and native offspring of praftice and experience, than of theory and fpecula- tion.
