    Preface During the summer months of i960, 1961, 1962 and 1964, a four-week practical course in microbial genetics was presented by the members of the staff of the Medical Research Council's Microbial Genetics Research Unit at Hammersmith Hospital, London. Many of the staff members had experienced and enjoyed the excellent summer courses in phage and bacterial genetics that had been presented at Cold Spring Harbor, New York, and so were encouraged to present their own specialities in a similar practical course. Each course was attended by 18-24 students drawn from universities and research departments mainly in the United Kingdom, but extending to nine other European countries. Those attending ranged in experience from professor to post-graduate student and came from such diverse backgrounds as bacteriology, biochemistry, genetics, physics and virology. The course was primarily 'do-it-yourself, designed around 30 or more key experiments in microbial genetics, one or two experiments being performed per day. The experiments were supplemented by about 40 or so lectures and tutorials which attempted to cover some of the more theoretical aspects of molecular biology. The success of these courses, the considerable demand for copies of the experi¬ mental notes and the dispersion of many of those involved in the teaching has prompted us to present the laboratory material in this published form. The experiments represent the personal choices of the individual instructors and reflect their own compromises for those that demonstrate certain basic concepts in modern genetics, whilst being capable of giving clear and reproducible results in a minimum of time by the inexperienced experimentalist. It is to be hoped that these experiments, although by no means giving an exhaustive coverage of microbial genetics, will help to fill the gap which confronts those instructors, who, although familiar with the published literature, are hesitant to attempt to reproduce the support¬ ing experiments with a class of students. xii
