![disease (the itch) with which all the Scotch are so frequently tormented; indeed it seldom hap- pens that the whole of a family are ever free from this malady, from the peer to the laird*, downwards to the Highland piper: I might have m truth included the generality of the inhabit- ants. This disease, and another equally pecu- liar to all Scots-]-, seem to be hereditary amongst them. This is not the only kind of medicinal water found in Scotland ■ it abounds with many mi- neral waters, particularly those of Kinghorn and Balgrigy in the province of Fife, and those of Aberdeen and Peterhead, many of which do not yield to those of Pyrmont in Germany, or to the celebrated waters of Spa in the bishopric of Liege. The most esteemed waters in Europe* are the pepper-baths on the Alps: they have been the subject of so many treatises, that it is almost useless to say any thing of them here. The place from whence they spring is scarcely accessible to the sunbeams, and to no men but those of the greatest courage.
