    have received such an education as enables them, as amateurs, to derive profit and en- joyment from analogous studies, such as chemistry, pliysics, geology, and natural his- tory in all its branches. To such men anatomy and physiology, and the principles of medical science and of the medical art, will be found' to yield instruction and amuse- ment of the highest and best kind, to say nothing of the great advantage such know- ledge must be to themselves and friends, not only in regard to the preservation of their health, but in regard also to their conduct when afflicted with disease. Even a moderate amount of knowledge of the general nature of diseases, and of the mode of operation and powers of the medical art, will make a man a better patient; make him more content with the treatment pre- scribed, be it energetic or inert; and make him repose greater confidence in his physician. ^'Of Nature and Art in the Cure of Disease.
