The magnificent designs of this rare volume are generally attributed to Giovanni Bellini, the master of Titian and Giorgione, although others have not scrupled to ascribe them to Raffaele himself. Pope, the poet, however, thinks them either by Francis, who taught Marc Antonio, or else by Andrea del Mantegna. 958 Aldini (T.) De Civitate Det, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON veLLuM [IraLiAN, XVrH Century], 228 di. (14 by 9 in.), written in gothic characters, double columns, 56 lines to a page, running titles and chapter headings in red, with 18 large very finely executed ornamental initials with elonga- tions of conventional floreate scrolls, grotesque heads of birds and animals introduced, forming single borders, painted in brilliant colours and illuminated with burnished gold, nume- rous other initials painted in red and blue alternately, decora- ted with vertical pen-lines and flourishes, apparently defective at end, first page rubbed slightly, otherwise the condition is excellent throughout, old limp vellum .
