    In order to obviate and remedy thefe evils, many charitable institutions have been founded ; and no city or country has been fo highly distinguished for this truly lau- dable diSpoSition, as this great metropolis. Noble hofpitals have been erected in all quarters of it; but, upon examination, it was found, that thefe were only proper for the reception of a certain clafs of patients, and not even Sufficient to accommodate one third part of thofe who Stood in need of relief. Many, from a decent pride, did not choofe to be found in thofe publick places of charity 5 whilfl the affairs of others might be ruined by quitting their habitations : fome, in acute difeafes, were received too late, from the length of time neceffary to gain admittance; and others, from the na- ture of their diforders, became worfe, by being pent up in clofe wards and impure air; without mentioning the contagion in- cident to hofpitals, which frequently in- fected thofe who were confined therein.
