The principal Epidemic Diseases are Typhoid and Paratyphoid Fevers, Cerebro-spinal Fever, Scarlet Fever, Whooping Cough, Diphtheria, Influenza and Measles. BIRTH RATE. There were 850 births in 1949, giving a birth rate of 20.9 as compared with 961 births in 1948 and 1,148 in 1947, with rates respectively of 23.5 and 28. This is the lowest birth rate to be recorded in the last 50 years with the exception of the war years, 1942, 1944 and 1945. The comparative figure for Scotland and for the large burghs is 18.5. ILLSGITIMACY. There were 36 illegitimate births during 1949 with aerate of 4,2 as compared with 54 in 1948 and 59 in 1947 and rates oi 5.6 and 5.1 respectively. The comparative figures for Scotland is 5.5 and for the large burghs 5.3. STILL-BIRTHS. There wore 29 still-births and a still-birth rate of 33 in 1949 as compared with 29 and a rate of 29 in 1948 and 33 and a rate of 28 in 1947. DEATHS FROM ALL CAUSES. 483 deaths were registered in 1949 with a death rate of 11.9 as compared with 468 in 1948 and 486 in 1947 with rates of 11.4 and 11.9 respectively. The rate for Scotland is 12.3 and for the large burghs 12.5 ^1 ^ from Infectious or Contagious Diseases. Deaths from the principal epidemic diseases numbered 2 (1 diphtheria and 1 influenza), the epidemic disease rate being 0.05 as compared with 0.11 for Scotland and for the large burghs.
