Chicago, 7th November, 1892. £8 8s A fine and interesting specimen of a rare autograph letter. ‘Dear Mr. Stedman,—I have at last found certain mislaid receipts, which show that I was honest in my statement to Mr. Thayer eighteen months ago. You see the whole botheration has arisen out of an overpayment made in 1889. Presumably Mr. Thayer has forgotten all about our difference, but I am anxious to remove any unpleasant suspicion that may perchance linger in his mind, so I am calling upon you to show the accompanying papers to Mr. Thayer; and then please return them to me. Camp Quarter House (Carolina), 14th March, 1782. £25 An extremely interesting letter written whilst serving with Lord Rawdon’s regiment in America. “> You see by this letter we are not so bad here as you expected, and that we have found our way back to the sea-side without having been taken prisoners; we are within 6 miles of Charlestown with a fine army able to beat any thing the Rebels have in this part of the world at present; a great number of people expect a siege, I myself do not think we shall have one. The French troops are not yet arrived; nor do I think they will arrive. They seem to like the Tabao of Virginia very much: but if they do come I think Savannah will be the place against which they will direct their forces; if the news of their fleet having been beat in the West Indies is true, I think the scale will be again in our favour, not that I think we shall ever make anything of the war by force of arms, as it still increases the inveteracy of the inhabitants against us; I think the present circumstances are more favourable for an accommodation than ever before, for since Lord Corn: surrender they hate the French which has taken
