![The Author, in the Preface to the First Edition, had to acknowledge with pleasure how greatly he was in- debted to Mr. Quain for facts and data. In this present Preface he wishes to renew that acknowledgment; and he has further to say that he is under great obligation to his colleague, Dr. Burdon Sanderson, who has kindly furnished him with an important note on the physio- logical considerations involved.
