![Dip tit.tieria Immunisation 358 children were immunised for the first time during 1947 and 618 previously immunised children were given ’maintenance' inoculations. These figures are an improvement on last year’s figures and the percentage of children under school age who have been immunised is approximately 80 per cent. No cases of diphtheria occurred during the vear. Vaccin.at_io_n_ Against Smallpox Only a small minority of parents are willing to allow their children to be vaccinated. 28 infants were vaccinated during 1947. Port Sanitary_Regulations During the year 146 vessels made a port in Shetland their first port of call after leaving a foreign country. In each case satisfactory Declaration of Health statements were received. One aircraft from a Scandinavian country landed at Sumburgh before proceeding to its destination further south. The necessary public health enquiries were made regarding this 'plane. TUBERCULOSIS Zetland County Sanatorium This institution has been understaffed during the year but the nursing and domestic staff have managed to meet every difficulty. During the year 20 patients were admitted, 13 were discharged and 3 died. Of the 13 patients discharged, one subsequently died. 2 v/ere discharged shortly after admission because they were not found to be tuborcu]cue. The remaining ten patients showed improvement, 7 of them bavin? the disease in a quiescent state. During the year 5 parients with pulmonary tuberculosis were transferred from Zetland County Sanatorium to the Gilbert Bain Hospital for short periods to receive treatment and examination of a surgical nature. 4 patients from Shetland arc receiving in-patient treatment for tuberculosis in institutions in the south. surgica1_ Tuberculosis At the Gilbert Bain Hospital 19 cases of non-pulmonary tuberculosis were treated and 16 were discharged.
