![Management of waterworks by local bodies.—There were in all 30 waterworks in operation in the State under management of different muni¬ cipalities. This number excludes the waterworks run by the Calcutta Cor¬ poration. The total population server! was approximately 1,917,300 with average daily supply of 18,515,230 gallons. In addition to these 30 waterworks, construction of another waterworks at Kanchrapara was under progress. Total capital expenditure for construction or improvement of these waterworks incurred during 1952-53 was Rs. 4,28,942. Management of drainage work by local bodies.—A total number of 26 municipalities maintained their respective drainage work. An approxi¬ mate population served by such drainage work was 867,600 and a total capital expenditure incurred during 1952-53 was Rs. 2,80,674. Quality of drinking water.—On analysis of samples of water collected from various waterworks, the result obtained was satisfactory and the water supplied to the public was of very high quality. For isolated cases of un¬ satisfactory results of analysis, the municipal authorities concerned was forthwith advised as to the steps to be taken to improve the quality of water. For regulating the management of waterworks and sewerage works by local bodies, the following routine duries were carried out: — (1) Checking of monthly returns. (2) Scrutiny of annual budget estimates. (3) Scrutiny of monthly reports. (4) Scrutiny of quarterly returns of house connections. (5) Scrutiny of annual abstract accounts of depreciation. (6) Inspection of machineries of the waterworks [this was done by the Assistant Engineer (Mechanical)]. Inspections of waterworks and sewerage works.—The following water¬ works and sewerage works were inspected by the Executive Engineer (West Circle) : — (1) Serampore Waterworks. (2) Hooghly-Chinsurah Waterworks. (3) Uttarpara Waterworks. (4) Sewerage works at Serampore (in progress). The Assistant Engineer (Mechanical) inspected the following water¬ works and sewerage works : — (1) Serampore Works. (2) Titagarh Sewerage Works. (3) Burdwan Waterworks.
