    tinuance of which, the powers of the muscles and nervous system, previously exhausted by exercise, become restored. This state of sus¬ pension is denominated sleep, and is necessary to the existence of every animal as well as man. The approach of sleep is indicated by a peculiar feeling of languor and desire for rest. An inca¬ pacity for exercise of any kind, either mental or bodily, succeeds, the mind becomes unable to pursue any regular train of ideas, the limbs feel fatigued, and seek to dispose themselves in the most favourable position for inaction.
