    confused, give rise to images of a most per¬ plexing description. In this state they con¬ tinue for some time, until, sleep becoming more profound, the images wax fainter and fainter, till they entirely disappear; the brain is left to thorough repose, and utter unconsciousness en¬ sues. This is what is termed complete sleep. In incomplete sleep, or dreaming, some, of the mental faculties continue in activity while the remainder are in repose, and the senses and the volition are either suspended or in action, according to the circumstances of the case. Sleep being essential to existence, naturally takes place at stated periods, which may be, to a certain degree, extended by the will, or by circumstances hereafter to be mentioned.
