    recovery of the patient from all clinical symptoms of the disease rather than upon bacteriological methods to determine the period of absolute isolation (not less than four weeks). In view of the debility left by an attack, return to complete activity is deferred for at least two or three weeks after release from isolation. Tests QUARANTINE The period of quarantine for contacts is 10 to 14 days. If swabs from contacts show bacilli ‘‘bacteriologically positive,” a test for virulence should be made before suggesting any restrictions of liberty. Non-virulent bacilli may be considered as “negative.” INCUBATION PERIOD The incubation period of diphtheria may not exceed 24 hours. Commonly, it is three or four days, but it may be as long as 10 days. IMMUNITY Relapses and second attacks are met with, but are rare. In institutions in which different infectious diseases are treated, patients during convalescence from diphtheria may contract other diseases. Similarly, convalescents from other common infectious diseases may become infected with diphtheria.
