About this work
Description
In April 200619-year-old Bethany Walton underwent drastic abdominal surgery to bring her weight down from the dangerous 34-stone it had reached. Six months later she is a lower weight but the surgery has not done anything to tackle her psychological dependence on comfort eating and her weight loss is not as advanced as it should be. In this respect the programme points out that although surgery is being offered to more and more young people as a method of breaking a pattern of morbid obesity, some councilling is also essential. When Bethany begins treatment with Linda Brownbridge, a cognitive behavioural therapist her weight loss gets back on track and within a year of the surgery she has lost almost 6 stone - but more importantly she can see a future for herself as a non-obese young woman. The programme includes some surgical footage from Bethany's 2006 operation.
