    to eating, drinking, and grumbling. I have seen her with her two cheek-pouches perfectly crammed with po- tatoes at her one o’clock dinner, yet when my luncheon comes up she wTill begin to tremble and shake, and whine just like an old beggar at a street corner. It is very amusing to give her more than her pouches, and her two hands and two feet can hold ; she is so terribly greedy that she will try not to let the other monkeys have a bit. Jenny has the power of pricking her ears a little when angry; she makes a threatening face, and grunts out, 4 Haw, haw.’ I have discovered Jenny’s weak point by accident; she is in mortal terror of the house-broom. I have only to put the broom round the corner of the door, and she cries 4kik, kik,’ until it is gone. Such is her fear of this unknown object, that she is inces- santly looking round the corner, expecting it to ap- pear. The broom is of great use to me to stop a fight. She has lately taken to carry Little Jack about between her teeth, caring not a bit for his screams; directly she sees the broom she drops Little Jack, who begins to tease her again. Carroty Jane goes upon three legs, and her face has the aspect of a very old beggar woman. She is so thin that you might almost call her a living skeleton, and yet she is eating the best of food all day long—potatoes, carrots, boiled rice and treacle, nuts, grapes, and raw meat. She is an awful beggar, and when the luncheon comes up, she hobbles across the room, climbs up on to the table, and whines most piteously until she gets something or other.
