![EXAMYNACIONS* TAKEN AT THE CYTIE OF YORKE THE XXII™ OF MAYEj IN THE XIXth YEARE OF THE [REIGN OF OUR] SOUVEREIGN LADYE ELIZABETHE, ETC., UPON CERTEN ARTYCLES BEFORE PETER NEWARKE/ ESQTJIER, ANDREWE TREWE AND WILLIAM MOOREHOWSE, GENT., BY vertue, etc. [Special Commissions, York. No. 2609. Public Record Office.] Henry Dicksone, of the cytie of Yorke, yoman, of tVage of lxx° yereSj or thereaboutes, sworne and examined. To the fyrste [article saieth that he haithe hearde ?] that theare was a guylde or brotherhead called Corpus Christi guilde, w*out Mycklegate barre, wTin the suburbes of the cytie of Yorke. To the second article he saieth that he dothe knowe a howse w^out Mycklegate barre called and knowne.by the name of S*. Thomas [hospitall] or S*. [Thomas] howse; and he saieth that the same howse is that wch was called Corpus Christi guild howse, wherein the guilde or brotherhead [was] usuallie kepte. To the iijrd article he saieth that one Sr John Barnarde, one Sr William Lighfote and Sr Cristofer Painter [preists ?], wth others, weare severallie masters of the said guilde or brother- head in the tyme of the late kinge Henry the viijth; and also that twelve preists weare bretherne of the same [guilde] at that tyme, and were called and knowne by the name of the master and bretherne of Corpus Christi guilde; and also that one Sr Nych[olas Atky nso] nnew and Sr Thomas Gramell (?) weare preistes theare successively, and said masse of Corpus Christi in the said house dailie; and that he knowe that be trewe, for he* was one of the said bretherne, and paied yearelie to the said guilde iiijd.; as all the rest of the said bretherne dyd. To the iiijth he saieth that theare ar divers lands, tenements ' I am indebted to the kindness of James J. Cartwright, Esq., of the Public Record Office, for a transcript of these Examynacions, which were discovered by him shortly before this sheet was sent to press. They were taken by virtue of a Special Commission in 1577, the year qfter the Crown had granted the pos- sessions of the late guild of Corpus Christi to John Marshe and others (see p. 312, antea); but there is nothing to shew why the Commission was issued. See p. 311, antea. v William Lyghtfuyt was master of the guild in 1534, John Barnard in 1536, and Christopher Paynter in 1543. Nicholas Atkinson, one of the keepers of the guild in 1534, died in 1548. * Hen. Dyxson et uxor became members of the guild in 1544. In May, 1559, Henry Dykson was admitted one of the bead-folkes of St. Thomas's hospital, and lycensyd to ly in the preyst chambre.
