    The Causes of Constipation are many. Here are a few of them :— (1). Weak muscles, especially those about Some chiet the abdomen. ER ERER (2). Wrong positions of the body, and especi- ally the sagging down of the organs: as, for instance, when the stomach presses upon the colon. (3). Muscular tension, and the gripping habit. (4). Dryness—the tract being deficient either in water, or in oily material, or in the special juices which should be poured forth by special glands. (5). The want of bulk, and particularly of fibre or “cellu- lose,” in the food. On the other hand, there may be excessive bulk, especially when it consists of : (6). Clogging materials, among the worst of which one may quote strong cocoa and chocolate, strong tea, ordinary hard-boiled eggs, many flesh-foods, ordinary rice, white bread, and such astringent fruits as blackberries. (7). Deficiency of certain elements, especially certain natural “salts.” I have known cases in which a finely- drained tea made from bran and raisins effected a complete cure, by the “salts’’ and the liquid, where distilled water had failed to help. To these Causes we may add :— (8). Hard water. (9). Too frequent irritation, not only by drugs,* but also by superabundance of fruits, coarse wholemeal bread, etc. (10). Worry and other undesirable mental conditions. (x1). Irregularity. * Even from an advertisement of a Drug we cau often learn something useful! Here is a quotation :— These give temporary relief only to increase the trouble afterwards. All sufferers know this, but they do not know the veason. This is the veason. Purgatives do not digest food; they simply expel it. Nature’s way 1s to extract all the nourishment from the food and then to expel the vefuse. The purgatives weaken the bowel, which depends more and more on the artificial assistance.
