    PREFACE Since the introduction of formalin as a method of hardening and preserving the soft structures in the human subject was first introduced into this Hospital by Mr. Keith, the relations and true position of all the structures can be much more easily appreciated than was formerly the case. During the last three years I have availed myself of this method to study the exact position of the lymphatic glands; too often these structures are removed by students before their relations have been sufficiently studied. My object in venturing to bring this book to their notice is to indicate by a series of diagrams the position of the main groups of lymphatic glands, and to endeavour to show how these somewhat dry anatomical facts have an im- portant bearing upon surgery. No attempt, except by incidental reference, is made to point out the areas which the various groups of glands drain; this I hope to work out from a clinical point of view later on. In some instances I have availed myself of diagrams taken from well-known anatomical text books, viz. An- terior and lateral cervical muscles from Morris's Anatomy, The axillary artery and its branches from Gray, and The Costocoracoid membrane
