    TREATISE, See. ; i Tan subject of this treatise has engaged the attention, and exercised the talents, of the most eminent physicians in all ages; but they have beef so unfortunate in their attempts, and so unsuccessful in their exertions, that the gout is still considered to be an incurable ~ disease, and the reproach of the medical pro- fession. | , In this respect, medical men have an ardu- ous task to perform: first, from its being a _ prevailing opinion, that the gout is a salutary disease and ought not to be cured; and secondly, fromits being a well-founded opinion, that it is’ an obstinate disease and cannot be cured, unless the patient will co-operate with the physician, and subimit'to a certain degree of mortification and self-denial.
