He therefore, when he perceived this to be the Cafe, ftrove by all proper Means to confi- der what Diet, Exercife, and Medicines, would be moft proper to diminifh the Stone and Gravel, to diffolve thefe Concretions, and expel them from both thefe Organs. The Meafure the Dodtor made Ufe of, to obtain the firft Intention, was to abridge himfelf of all Flefh-meat; to eat of no¬ thing but the youngeft Animals: Two Days in the Week to intermit all animal Food, and to eat fparingly, even at thefe Times : That the Balance of Equality between the Solids and Fluids might be preferved, to exercife little under Pain; and not much, when tree. In the Adminiftration of all Medicines, we ought to be highly careful never to prefcribe ftrong Diuretics, or what are vulgarly called Stone-breakers, under great Pain, feeing they feldom do much Service, but often increafe the Inflammation, and put the Patient to exquifite Torture; for they increafe the Pain, contract the Parts, and thereby hinder the Stone in its De~ fcent and Paflage.
