Num. 1802. lion to one Mr. Conry an Irifh-man then in Eng¬ land, who had fome knowledge of the Antient Irifh, & having compared Mr. Poland’s Verfion with the MS. did not altogether approve thereof', but at my Requeft gave me another Verfion of the fame words: both which Verfions follow, Num. 1802. that I fay fomewhat touching the Antiquity of this Exemplar, which is beft to be known by the Notes written at the End of each of the Gofpels. But thefe being written, for the greateft part in the Irifh 'Tongue, I procured a Tranjlation of them from Mr. Toland, which he readily gave me from the bock itfelf. Mr. Toland upon his turning COdelbpigce into B r 1 g 1 d 1 a n u s, gave me this following Note. “ There are no Words that (in the Irifh <c Tongue) enter eftner into the Compofition “ of Proper Names than Maol and Gilla, ef- <c pecially fince Chriftianity : the laft word “ fignifying Slave, and the firft Retainer. In “ the times of Learning, the Irifh knew how 41 to render thefe into Latine, tho they after- “ wards forgot it. Thus Maol-Muire is Ma- “ rianus, Gilla-Criofd Chriftianus; Maol “ Brigdte Brigidianus, Maol-vanaig Monachi- tc us, Gill-Eafpuig Epifcopius, Gilla-Coluim “ Columbanus, &c.” Mr. Conry approved of this Note; to which I fubjoin another in the late learned Mr. Edward Lhwyds Archaol. Britan. Tit. x. pag. 431. “ Maol a Servant. It was antiently (out of “ Reverence to Saints) prefix’d to their Names “ in Chriftening, as Maol-Coluim St. Co- “ lumbus’s Servant, Maol-Seachluijst St. “ Secundin’s &c. In the fame manner as “ Gila (now written Giolla) in Gila- tc cholum, Gilabri, Gi l a-phadruice, “ GlLEOIN, GlLEOgAIN, &c.” Mr. Toland tranflated the two firft words of the fecond Line Lismori^e, fuppofing it to fig- nifie the Town or City of Lifmore , and that the Principal Letter L was left out in order to its be¬ ing Entred at Large, and with a different Color by the Illuminator. To this Mr. Conry faid, that the Words are fignifeative as they are, and with¬ out any relation to Lifmore : and that there are two Sentences in the three Lines, as may be plain¬ ly perceived by the pundluation the firfi Line be¬ ing an intire Sentence of it felf. To this I beg leave to add, that lately in the Honble. Mr. Brydges’s Library, in divers of his Irifh MSS. 1 have feen the fame words, written in the fame manner, at the beginning of Paragraphs, when I have fuppofed the Subjell could have no relation to Lifmore. In the Irifh MS. of this Library no. 432. being an antient Tranfcript of the Book of Cloin, in Munfler with a Colledlion of Laws, as Mr. Conry told me, the word IS fo written, be- ginneth very many Paragraphs, the next word (like that above) being always written in a fmailer hand: and in fol. 12. I in. 5 or 6. I find IS nfy which comes fomewhat near the fame. In another of my Lords Irifh MSS. viz. no. 546. being a Medicinal book, in a Chapter concerning the Afihma. fol. 30. lin.' 8. 1 find the contefled words written at the beginning of a Sentence in the fame manner 1 S roof. Mr. Toland told me that the Words above, mdc Cdpcbdig, which he tranflated Cardaigi, do not here fignifiy Mac Carty a great Family in Ireland; but rather Filius Fabri, Filius Opificis, or Filius Aurif abri. But Mr. Conry was of opinion that it was the Sur-Name of a Family, and that the per- fon there mentioned was properly written Cor mac mac Carty.
