Archbishop Trench of Dublin has judicially described the literary merit of Baxter in speaking of the ‘“ Saints Everlasting Rest”: “‘ Let me mention here, before entering into deeper matters, one formal merit which the ‘ Saints Everlasting Rest’ eminently possesses. For beauty of diction and style it is unsurpassed. This work is difficult to find perfect and collations vary. In some copies there are Dedications to the various books but they were probably added later as insets, as they did not form part of the continuous signatures. This copy has the four supplementary leaves at end (often absent). ‘“‘ Broughton in the Conclusion of His Concent of Scripture ” and “ A Poem of Master J.
