    se valieron para el caso aquellos constructores; uno de los factores mas efica¬ ces con que contaban era sin duda el tiempo; y otro era el trabajo de miles de creyentes, y parece lo mas probable que las pirᬠmides se construyeran po¬ co á poco, empezando la obra por una pirámide cen¬ tral pequeña que iba digᬠmoslo asi, creciendo por capas sucesivas con que se las revestía hasta alcan¬ zar las dimensiones que hoy conservan. Otras construcciones se encuentran en toda la ex¬ tension del plano en que están situadas las pirámi¬ des y esas construcciones constituían la gran ciudad y hoy se hallan cubiertas por sus propios escombros presentando esos escom¬ bros la forma de montícu¬ los de 10 á 15 metros de al¬ tura perpendicular. La calle ó avenida que une las dos pirámides se conoce con el nombre de Calle de los muertos, en mexicano Miccaótli: tiene de ancho 20 metros, en to¬ do lo largo de ella existe una gradería formada por una serie de gradas cons¬ truidas de argamasa de blocks of volcanic stone with which the pyramids were constructed. To this day even, the means which those | builders made use of, in their work, is unkno¬ wn. One of the greatest fac¬ tors on which they counted must certainly have been Timé. Another was doubt¬ less the willing labor of thousands of the Faithful, it seems very probable that the pyramids were con¬ structed little by little; the work beginning, we may say, with a small central py¬ ramid or core which contin¬ ued to grow with successive layers of rock and earth¬ work, until it reached the dimensions it preserves to¬ day. Other ruins are found scattered over the extensi¬ ve plain in which these two great pyramids are situa¬ ted; and these ruins consti¬ tuted the great city which is to-day found buried beneath its own rubbish. These ruins are found in the character of little mounds varying from tentó fifteen metres in height. The street or avenue l “Toltcc” is an Aztec word meaning ‘‘builder.’' Ed.]
