![to draw the milk from the breast, as authority for believing that as much as forty-one ounces (1,320 grams) are often secreted in twenty-four hours. He found, after drawing the milk of a large number of women, that about fifty to sixty grams were secreted by each breast in the course of two hours. Parrot* followed a method proposed by Natalis Guillot, which was to weigh an infant immediately before and after each nursing, and the increment in weight gave the amount of milk taken. Guillot weighed an infant only once a day, and assum- ing that it nursed about twenty-five times a day, concluded that the amount of milk taken was, on the second day after birth, twenty-two ounces (675 grams), and on the eighteenth day, ninety-two ounces (2,975 grams). Parrot considers this esti- mate as much too high, and quotes Bouchaud, who estimated the quantity by weighing directly before and after each nursing. By this method it was determined that an infant nursed only from eight to ten times daily, and the following results were arrived at as to the quantities of milk taken from the first day after birth up to nine months :— First day 3° grams ( T% drachms).
