![A deco&ion of the leaves in ale is fometimes made ufe of by country people for rheumatic complaints* and other obftinate diforders, but it operates fo violently both upwards and down- wards, as to render its ufe very unfafe, unlefs in fkilful hands, or very robuft conftitutions. Anointment made of the flowers, by boiling them in May butter, is very ufeful to drcfs fcro- phulous fores and fcabby heads with. In fmall dofes it a£!s as a diuretic, and is excellent in dropfles. See Withering on the Fox-glove. F R O G - B I T. 1 Hydrocbaris Morfus-Ra>us, 22. 8. Root : perennial; it confifts of feveral very long, thick, white fibres. Leaves : growing in cluflers on long leaf-ftalks; they are of a roundifh figure, or rather kidney-fhaped, very entire at the edges, fmooth, of a flefhy fubftance, and a dark green (Colour. Flowers-, barren and fertile on diftinft plants; they Hand on long, llender fruit-ftalks, and are white. Flower-cup: of the barren flower, double; the outer- moft is a flieath of two leaves, incloftng three flowers, each of which is furnifhed with a proper cup, of three oblong, con- cave leaves, with membranaceous edges. Blossom; compofed of three large, roundifh petals. Chives: nine; they are awl-fhaped, upright, and difpofed in three rows, and from the bafe of the middlemoft, or central row, rifes an awl-fhaped fubftance, refembling a fliaft; the other two rows are united to each other at the bottom, and all of them are furnifhed with Ample tips. Flower-cup: of the fertile flower, as above, but they grow finglely on their fruit-ftalks, and are deftitute of a flieath. Blossom : as in the barren flower. Chives : wanting. Pointal : the feed-bud is fituated below the bloflom, and of a roundifh figure, fupporting fix comprefled, cloven, fur- rowed fhafts, equaling the cup in length, and terminating in ] cloven, tapering fummits. Seed-vessel: a roundifh capfule of a leathery fubftance; it is divided into fix cells.
