    THE AUTHOR’S PREFACE. These obfervations were collected during a journey, which the Author undertook in the years 1793 and 1794, by fpecial permiffion of Her late Imperial Majefty, for the recovery of his health : they appeared to him worthy of being laid before the Public ; as they may tend to fupply deficiencies in his former Travels, performed in the years 1768 and 1769* while they will exhibit a view of the changes which have taken place fince that period in feveral diftri£ts; and likewife afford more corre6t information refpe&ing fuch provinces of the extenfive Ruffian Empire as have not hitherto been vifited, or defcribed, by travellers. Hence, he trufts, the indulgent Public will receive this work with that partiality which his former “ Travels’1 have experienced; efpecially as he has fludioufly omitted every trivial circumftance, and inferted in his Journal only the minutes of thofe fa£ts, which have eluded the attention of other obfervers. The fecondpart of thefe Travels will contain a defcription of theTauridan peninfula, commonly called the Crimea, and will be embelliflied with various perfpe&ive views of that delightful country.
