    Loftus did not long remain Provost, surcharged as he was with the weight of other and more lucrative appointments, and on his resignation in 1594, the choice of the Fellows, in whose hands the election at that time lay, fell upon another Cambridge man, also of Trinity College, Walter Travers, a Puritan, a learned Orientalist, author of Eccles'iastica Disciplma^ and a friend of Thomas Cartwright, the English Puritan. To Cecil, his friend and patron, Travers wrote, giving his impressions of the College : ‘ Being a quadrant of brick of three stories, and on every side within the court it is 120 feet broad ; the west side which is of chambers, and the north side wherein are the chapel, hall, buttery, and kitchen, are orderly finished. The other two sides are only walls, having some little beginning of chambers, which for want of further means is yet unperfect. If the whole were finished it would con- veniently lodge 200 scholars and twenty fellows.’ The small quadrangle of the Elizabethan College, with its buildings of red brick, surmounted on the north by the steeple, which had been part of the Aroasian priory, was certainly characterized by no architectural splendour. It was not until the beginning of the eighteenth century that the library, the first of the present great buildings, was erected, and the College began to take on the air of severe magnificence which now distinguishes it. Between the gates of the sixteenth-century College and the castellated walls of Dublin lay the Green, upon which swine and cattle grazed, interfering with the comfort and security of pedestrians, hardly less than
