![Costs F. There are four main cost variables in the model which influence total NHS costs. These are shown in table 2, with the direction in which the factor pushes costs. Real increases in costs are the increases in costs year on year within the NHS over and above economy-wide inflation. Generally health input costs rise faster than retail price inflation. The real increase in bed-related and case related costs (of 3.4% and 4% respectively) is the main driver for pushing up all costs. All the other variables have the effect of restraining expenditure.
